The Scythians were Iranian equestrian tribes who inhabited large masses of land in the central Eurasian steppes. This took place from the 7th century to the 4th century. Scientists hypothesize that it is possible that the tribe of the Siberian Ice Maiden was part of the Scythian civilization. The Scythians were a nomadic people, that inhabited large regions within eastern Europe(within the 5th century) including the Altai region (where the Siberian Ice Maiden lived). Not only did the Ice Maiden live in Scythian territory, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that that she and her tribe were a nomadic people. Although artifacts like temporary objects are used as evidence to prove a nomadic people, the objects within the Ice Maiden's tomb and her mummification process can be used to prove that she was part of a nomadic tribe, most likely to be Scythian. Her mummified body with elaborate tattoos, being buried with horses and being buried with weapons, which obviously were not for ornamental purposes. These result are identical to that of nomadic tribes of eastern Europe. Also nomadic tribes of this area place great value on women within there tribe. The elaborate burial of the Ice Maiden can symbolizes her role within her society as a woman and not a higher class individual. The Scythians had an artistic tradition, valuing equestrian arts. This corresponds with the burial of the Ice Maiden. Not only was her body an art work but everything around her was decorated with intricate design, like the headdress for her horses which could symbolize the importance of horses within a nomadic tribe.
The Amazonian myth dates back to ancient Greek mythology and writings of Herodotus. The Amazons were thought to be a fierce female warrior tribe from Scythia (modern day Russia and Ukraine). Herodotus believed that Amazons were incorporated into Scythian tribes. Through the excavation of the Siberian Ice Maiden and intensive research it is possible that Amazons did exist in the sense that women actively participated in warfare. This theory corroborates with the theory that the Siberian Ice Maiden's tribe was part of the Scythian civilization.
